Public comment at U.P. Energy Task Force meeting in Escanaba

Problems with wind and solar energy generation in the U.P. was brought up before the U.P. Energy Task Force yesterday during public comment. Escanaba Township resident Kim Wyckoff told the group that property owners feel like that had no input into a proposed solar project in Delta County. Joe Kaplan of Escanaba opposed wind turbines on the Garden Peninsula. He is also concerned about the impact that large scale solar projects could have on migratory birds. And Randall Scott of Bark River talked about the difficulty of deciding these issues.

 


 

United Way and Delta County Communities That Care

United Way of Delta County Director Julie Mallard talks about the fundraising campaign. The United Way is also involved in the Delta County Communities That Care. Coordinator Michelle Chailler says a few years ago, they found that kids were dealing with depression, thinking that drugs wouldn't harm them and a low commitment to school. Chailler says they then turned to the community to see what was available to help.

 

 

Talking with Mike Canull on Veteran's Day

WYKX-FM afternoon disc jockey Mike Canull served 21 years in the U.S. Army. It included two tours in Iraq and one in Afganistan.  During his second tour of Iraq, he ended up investigating the vehicle that his friend was killed in on patrol. Canull says he remembers that day like it was yesterday. Despite some sad times, Canull says he enjoyed his time in the military. He joined because he wanted to serve.
