The Detroit Lions have traded Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles for a pair of draft picks after signing cornerback Desmond Trufant to a two year deal.  The Lions will get 3rd and 5th round picks in this year's draft, where they now have nine selections overall and four of the draft's first 85 picks.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association Office in East Lansing is temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.  The MHSAA has not officially canceled the basketball and hockey tournaments, nor canceled the spring sports season.

Sportscast Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The Bay College baseball and softball seasons are over.  The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced spring sports seasons have been cancelled because of the coronavirus.  Both Norse teams recently returned from Florida.  The baseball team went 4-8 in the Sunshine State, while softball went 6-6.  The NJCAA did add another year of eligibility to athletes as part of the cancellation announcement.

Sportscast Monday, March 16, 2020

The 82nd annual Gold Medal Classic Independent Basketball Tournament has been postponed due to the coronavirus.  The tournament had been scheduled to be held March 19-29 in Hermansville.  The new dates for the tournament are April 16-26.

Sportscast Friday, March 13, 2020

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has suspended all postseason tournaments effective immediately and indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Included are boys and girls basketball, hockey and gymnastics.  More information is expected over the next few days.

Sportscast Wednesday, March 11, 2020

In High School Girls Basketball last night, the Escanaba Eskymos saw their best season in 20 years come to an end with a 62-51 loss to Sault Sainte Marie in the regional semifinals at Manistique.  Mari Bink led four players in double figures with 15 points for the Eskymos, who finish the season with a record of 13-8.

In High School Boys Basketball district openers last night, Marquette downed Petoskey 82-70 in Division 1, Menominee defeated Houghton 69-53 in Division 2, Bark River Harris fell to Munising 49-40 and Manistique lost to Negaunee 65-45 in Division 3, while in Division 4, North Central routed Republic-Michigamme 82-46 and Carney-Nadeau beat Forest Park 59-37.

In High School Gymnastics over the weekend, Escanaba placed 7th at the state regional tournament in Grand Rapids.  Abbie Derouin and Madison Block qualified in the vault competition for the individual state meet this weekend at Rockford.

Sportscast Monday, March 2, 2020

The Escanaba High School Boys Bowling team took 2nd place at the Division 2 regional tournament over the weekend in Gaylord.  Escanaba finished with 3,719 pins, one spot behind regional champion Cadillac with 3,873.  The Eskymos move on to the state finals this coming weekend in Waterford.

Sportscast Friday, Feb. 28, 2020

In High School Hockey last night, the Escanaba Eskymos defeated Negaunee 6-1 in a Division 2 regional semifinal at Negaunee.  Nick Kolich scored two goals and added two assists for the Eskymos, who host Marquette for the regional championship Wednesday night.

The basketball season for the Bay College mens and womens teams has come to an end.  The Bay women lost a heartbreaker, 60-57, to Gogebic Community College last night.  On the mens side, Bay dropped an 82-71 decision to Dakota County Technical College.

In High School Hockey Saturday, the Escanaba Eskymos finished the regular season with a 7-2 victory over Painesdale-Jeffers on home ice.  Escanaba visits Negaunee Thursday for a Division 2 regional semifinal.

In High School Girls Basketball last night, the Escanaba Eskymos cruised to a 72-50 victory over Ishpeming.  Nicole Kamin led the way with 31 points for the Eskymos, who host undefeated Menominee Tuesday night.

In High School Wrestling last night, three area teams saw their seasons come to an end in regional tournaments.  In Division 2 at Clio, Escanaba dropped a 42-28 decision to state powerhouse Gaylord.  In Division 3, Gladstone fell to Grayling 42-39 and in Division 4, Bark River Harris was defeated by Onaway 48-31.

In High School Boys Basketball last night, Escanaba downed West Iron County 56-49, Negaunee knocked off Gladstone 75-43, Engadine outlasted Manistique in overtime 65-56, Rapid River fell to Munising 60-38, MId Peninsula beat Big Bay De Noc 58-32, Carney-Nadeau defeated Bark River Harris 62-56 and it was North Central over North Dickinson 55-43.

In High School Girls Basketball last night, the Escanaba Eskymos rallied to down the Gladstone Braves 47-39.  Escanaba outscored Gladstone 20-6 in the 4th quarter, behind a game high 21 points from Nicole Kamin.

Sportscast Monday, Feb. 17, 2020

College Basketball over the weekend, both the Bay College men and women's basketball teams were victorious Saturday in Chicago.  The Lady Norse hammered Harry Truman College 108-49.  Meanwhile, the Norse men wrapped up their regular season with 71-64 victory over Harry Truman College.

Sportscast Friday, Feb. 14, 2020

In High School Boys Basketball last night, the Marquette Redmen clinched their 4th straight Great Northern Conference title with a 68-64 win over Escanaba.  Brandon Frazer led four players in double figures with 15 points for the Eskymos, who are right back in action tonight, hosting Rapid River.

In High School Wrestling last night, the Escanaba Eskymos won their Division 2 team district tournament with a 51-24 victory over the host Marquette Redmen.  The Eskymos, who won the final ten matches, will take on Gaylord in a regional semifinal next Wednesday in downstate Clio.

In High School Girls Basketball last night, Kingsford downed Escanaba 46-35.  Nicole Kamin scored 16 points for the Eskymos, who visit Gladstone Monday night.  Elsewhere, Manistique edged Rapid River 50-44 in overtime, Ishpeming squeaked past Gladstone 48-46, Menominee drilled Crandon, Wisconsin 56-37 to go to 16-0, and Marquette blasted Houghton 85-54.
