Newscast Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022

Non-stop flights between Escanaba and Detroit will return in October, however flights to Minneapolis will be discontinued. It is the result of an effort between SkyWest Airlines, Delta County Airport Administration and the Delta County Airport Board to find a way to have a plane dedicated to Escanaba and still address the airline’s concern over s shortage of pilots.

 

Escanaba will share a flight with the airport in Pellston from Sept. 12 to Oct. 5. That schedule concerned Delta County Airport Manager Andrea Nummilien that there would not be enough seats for passengers in Escanaba. The new schedule will begin on Oct. 6 with two flights between Escanaba and Detroit.

Newscast Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022

New mining laws could help to improve mining opportunities in the Upper Peninsula. State Sen. Ed McBroom says bills offered by State Rep. Sara Cambensey would improve on original bills written by the late State Sen. Tom Casperson. McBroom says the bills that they hope will pass yet this year will consolidate the permitting process and limit lawsuits.

Newscast Monday, Aug. 29, 2022

Authorities are searching for a 56-year-old man who disappeared a week after planning to bicycle from Escanaba to his home in Marquette County. The Marquette County Sheriff’s office says Dennis Kivioja was last seen on Tuesday, Aug. 23 in the Escanaba area. They say he had plans to ride his bike to his property on Boney Falls Road in Wells Township but has not returned.

Newscast Friday, Aug. 26, 2022

A generation of people with an altered sense of reality caused by online gaming is concerning law enforcement. 1st Lt. Gregg Cunningham with the Gladstone State Police Post says there are some who are so into gaming that it carries over into real life. That may be the case with Caleb Anderson of Iron County who was arrested for assaulting and attempting to kidnap a woman jogging.

Newscast Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022

COVID-19 concerns are less of a priority for school districts than a year ago when multiple plans were made to address potential spread of the virus. As students get ready to go back to school this year, Escanaba School Superintendent Coby Fletcher says they’ve returned to more routine types of planning needed to prepare for a new school year. COVID-19, he says, is less of a worry.

Newscast Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022

Area veterans will be honored before Thursday’s Escanaba Eskymos football. It starts with a picnic at 5:30 p.m. Rusty Bluse with the Escanaba Fan Club and Quarterback Club says all veterans and active duty servicemen and their spouses are welcome to attend. The group will be served hamburgers and brats.

 

Along with the fan club and quarterback club, the event is sponsored by the Escanaba Elks Lodge 354. The veterans will then be invited onto the field before the game to be recognized and shake the players’ hands.

Newscast Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022

There is interest in developing the Delft Theater in Escanaba as a micro-cannabis business. The Escanaba City Council specifically added micro-businesses to its ordinance last Thursday. Councilmember Tyler Dubord said at the time that they added micro-cannabis businesses because of interest.

Newscast Monday, Aug. 22, 2022

Relations appear to be strained between Escanaba’s City Manager and the city council. The council wants to make Patrick Jordan’s evaluation public which includes input from department heads who work for Jordan. Jordan objects to releasing the evaluation.

 

Jordan was not present at the end of the executive session Thursday that dealt with his evaluation. He says he was asked to leave.
