At least two current Delta County Commissioners expressed interest in serving as county chair when the new commission meets in January. Commissioners John Malnar and Dave Moyle both said they would be interested in serving as county chair during an informational meeting yesterday with newly elected commissioners.

Newscast Monday, Nov. 28, 2022

The Bay College Board of Trustees is taking input from the community to identify the characteristics and qualifications needed for Bay’s next president. Laura Coleman is retiring in June. Community listening sessions led by the presidential search consultant will be held this week. Coleman says anyone interested in Bay’s involvement in the community should attend.

Gladstone and Rapid River School Superintendent Jay Kulbertis says they will be dealing with COVID-19 funds for several years funding issues like learning loss and technology. He says that can make budgeting difficult. Despite that, he says the Gladstone Public Schools received a clean audit.

There are currently 29 apprenticeship programs in the Upper Peninsula with 177 apprentices. Most are in construction which as a long history using the apprenticeship program.

 

But Delta County Economic Development Alliance Director Ed Legault says changes in the program through Michigan Works should increase the use of apprentices in other sectors.

As interim city manager, Jim McNeil says his goal is to guide the city of Escanaba until a new city manager is hired. He is the city assessor and was named interim city manager when Patrick Jordan left the position to take another job. He expects a good transition period.

Newscast Friday, Nov. 18, 2022

The Escanaba City Council approved a purchase agreement with Terrace Bay for property next to the former Delta County jail. The company is already in the process of purchasing the jail property from the county. Interim City Manager Jim McNeil says an agreement was reached on the sale of property that will be used to build a new hotel on the lakeshore.

Newscast Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022

The Michigan Natural Resource Commission was presented a wolf management plan last week that includes a hunt in Michigan if the courts allow the states to again manage the wolf population. The NRC will vote on the plan at its December meeting.

 

Dave Anthony of Bark River serves on the commission. He says they want to be ready to go when wolves are again delisted from the federal endangered list.

Delta County is dealing with a shortage of staff at the Delta County Jail. County Administrator Emily DeSalvo told the county board last night that they are continuing to address the problem.

The Michigan Firearm Deer Season gets underway today. Hunters are heading to camp to find that elusive buck. Ralph Johnson of Escanaba is at a camp in LaBranche. He says it is a place he loves to go to to get away.

School Resource Officers have already made a difference in area schools as the program receives renewed attention to avert problems within the schools. Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District Superintendent Doug Leisenring says those officers often learn about potential trouble before the problem occurs.

Newscast Friday, Nov. 11, 2022

A consultant has been chosen to assist in the selection of a new Bay College President. Laura Coleman is retiring in June after 16 years with the college. Coleman says the board of trustees chose the community college executive search firm Gold Hill Associates of Grand Rapids. A group of community and college leaders have also been chosen to help narrow the search to eight applicants.

Lauren Wickman wants to fill that third prosecuting attorney position in Delta County as soon as possible. She was elected Tuesday to fill the remaining Prosecutor term.

 

She was the chief assistant prosecuting attorney in Delta County and became the acting prosecutor in April when Brett Gardner resigned. But because she was not appointed to the position, the assistant slot remained open. Her win Tuesday will change that.

Bob Barron will continue as a county commissioner in Delta County. He defeated incumbent Democratic candidate Theresa Nelson yesterday 2,070 to 1,808. The race pitted two incumbents against each other in a newly drawn District 3.

Newscast Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022

A Great Lakes cruise ship company is scouting Escanaba as a possible stop during next year’s cruise season. Representatives from American Queen Cruises were in Escanaba to inquire about possible activities and tour the community. They met with officials from the Delta Chamber, Delta County Economic Development Alliance, Escanaba Downtown Development Authority, Escanaba City Council and North Shore Marine Terminal and Logistics.

Escanaba Mayor Mark Ammel says the search for a new city manager is an opportunity to focus for growth. Patrick Jordan resigned last week to take a new job as administrator of Ionia County. Ammel says he wants a new city manager who has a vested interest in the future of the community.

Newscast Friday, Nov. 4, 2022

The Escanaba City Council voted to close the Water Plant Road in Ludington Park until construction at the city’s water treatment plant is completed next year. Water Wastewater Superintendent Jeff Lampi asked the council to make the decision on whether or not to close the road now before it will be closed in April. The earlier closure would save the city $7,500.

Newscast Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022

All ten townships in Delta County using county zoning ordinances voted in favor of the county continuing to provide the service. The county board will make a decision at its Dec. 6 meeting.

 

The board voted in February to end zoning for the townships. The concern was the cost to the county. Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo says if they do continue to provide zoning services to the townships, then the county needs to stay current on mapping.

Newscast Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022

The Delta County Airport will again be sharing a flight, this time with Ford Airport in Kingsford beginning in December. Delta County Airport Manager Andrea Nummilien is concerned that it will again cause a shortage of passenger seats for the area but she says it will improve departure times and reinstates a flight to Minneapolis.

State Sen. Ed McBroom says recent moves to set aside large tracts of land for carbon credits is going to have a major impact on the timber industry in the Upper Peninsula. He says it will make it more difficult to harvest timber needed to support U.P. industries.
