The Gladstone State Police Post will be adding five new Troopers after the current State Police Training Academy. Post Commander 1st Lt. Gregg Cunningham says it will expand the number of Troopers at the Gladstone post and Manistique outpost from 15 to 20. That is still down from 32.

Forty-four priests at the Diocese of Marquette are being accused of sexual abuse since the 1950s. Attorney General Dana Nessel released a report yesterday concerning the allegations. She says the information was obtained through tip-lines, interviews, police investigations and documents seized from the Diocese.

Delta County Non-Motorized Trails is receiving a $350,000 federal grant to add nine miles of single track trail at the Days River Pathway. The pathway currently has three miles of single tract trail for mountain bikers. Rick Elrod says they are excited about expanding the trail.

The domestic abuse shelter in Escanaba has been full for several months indicating a problem in the area. However, Erin Viau at Try-County Safe Harbor says domestic violence and abuse is always there and a big issue in the community.

OSF HealthCare St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group announced plans Friday for a new facility to support cancer services. The project would relocate oncology services from the Medical Office Building to a larger, separate building at the hospital. They unveiled plans to renovate the former dialysis facility for the cancer unit.

 

OSF St. Francis Hospital President Kelly Jefferson says the new clinic will provide additional space and enhanced services for patients facing a cancer diagnosis.

Newscast Friday, Oct. 21, 2022

Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan has been offered a job as administrator of downstate Ionia County. The Ionia County Board of Commissioners approved an employment agreement with Jordan on Tuesday. The Ionia Sentinel Standard says the contract is contingent on final review by the county attorney and a background check from the Michigan Municipal League. 

 

The Escanaba City Council offered a new contract to Jordan that he refused to accept in place of his current contact. Last night, Jordan officially turned it down.

Newscast Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022

Students at the Escanaba Jr and Sr High Schools were released at the usual time yesterday after being lock downed for several hours due to a bomb threat. Classes resumed today as normal. All lockdowns were lifted.

Newscast Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022

The Escanaba Junior and Senior High School is currently in lockdown following a threat late this morning. Parents were told that the school received a concerning phone call. In consultation with Escanaba Public Safety and out of abundance of care, the schools decided to lock down.

The Gladstone City Commission has approved the third round of bills for the upgrades to its wastewater plant. Gladstone City Manager Eric Buckman says the nearly $1 million payments were made to C2AE architect and engineering and Staab Construction.

About 170 children in the Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District area up to three years old were evaluated last year for needs they might have before entering school. ISD Superintendent Doug Leisenring says the Early-On program is providing services to 88 children, some less than a year old.

County Commissioner Theresa Nelson maintains that a conflict of interest, that she says is ongoing, is hurting the county commission. The question came up at last night’s League of Women Voters forum in Escanaba.

Gladstone is coming off of a fairly successful recreational year. Gladstone City Manager Eric Buckman says the municipal beach was very busy throughout the summer and the Gladstone Bay Campground had another record year.

Newscast Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022

A new group called Families Against Narcotics, or FAN, will be meeting tonight. Delta County District Court Judge Steve Parks says the purpose of the group is help families with family members addicted to drugs or alcohol. Tonight’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Wellspring Church at the Delta Plaza Mall.

A shelter-in-place order in Menominee was extended by Menominee County Emergency Management until Sunday morning as fire continued to burn at the Resolute Forest Products mill.

Newscast Friday, Oct. 7, 2022

The Escanaba City Council has given City Manager Patrick Jordan two weeks to consider a new contract presented at last night’s council meeting. The contract was developed by a committee of the council with an outside attorney without input from Jordan. It includes a reduction in salary. Jordan continues to say he is not willing to renegotiate his contract.

Although the former Delta County Jail property only sold for a dollar, Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo says the county made out on the deal because it did not have to demolish the building. The county board approved the sale Tuesday to the Terrace Bay Hotel group for development of a hotel on the property.

The former Delta County jail has been sold for one dollar. Delta County Commissioners approved the sale to the Terrace Bay Hotel last night. Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo says they were able to reach an agreement with the developer.
