Law enforcement says recent arrests highlight the need for parents to talk with their children about the safe use of the Internet. Gladstone State Police Post Commander 1st Lt. Gregg Cunningham says parents should be monitoring their children’s use of the Internet so they don’t become victims.

The community center at new Life Church in Escanaba is opening Saturday with an open house. Construction slowed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit but Pastor Jason Janich says it is now ready for public use.

Newscast Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022

Seventy-nine veterans, two from the Korean War, the rest from the Vietnam War, are on a second Honor Flight today. Another one was held earlier this month. Scott Knauf with the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight says they had a large list of veterans interested in the flight because they were unable to fly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Newscast Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022

There are concerns that the negotiations over the sale of city property at the former Delta County jail site could jeopardize the development projects planned for the waterfront. The Escanaba City Council held a special meeting yesterday to address the concerns.

 

Swanee owner Matt Sviland who plans to build housing units at the site of the former Chamber of Commerce building told the council that if legal discussions continue to drag out, then nothing will happen and they will have to drop out.

The homeless shelter program Hope at the Inn may end if not enough volunteers are found. Shannon Tayler says it takes 150 to 200 volunteers to put on the program. They still need 50 to 100 volunteers to operate.

Newscast Friday, Sept. 23, 2022

Laura Coleman says she is retiring as Bay College President after 17 years. She notified the board of trustees Wednesday night that she is retiring as of June 30, 2023. Coleman is the fifth president of Bay since it started 60 years ago and longest serving. She says it has been a job that she has thoroughly enjoyed.

Delta County Commissioners will meet to start negotiations with township officials to end the county’s obligations to provide zoning for the townships. The move came after Commissioner Bob Barron tried to pass an ordinance that would repeal the current ordinance requiring zoning.

Delta County Commissioner Dave Moyle is asking that the county commission have a zero tolerance for profanity at its meetings, even if it’s his own. He told the commission last night that that was the reason he shutdown Joe Kaplan down during public comment at the Sept. 6 county board meeting.

Newscast Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission delayed a decision on muskie sizes on border waters in the Upper Peninsula until its October meeting. That meeting will be in Marquette.

 

Dave Anthony of Bark River, who serves on the NRC, says he does not feel the size limit for muskie should be changed to match the larger limit in Wisconsin in order to make it easier for them to enforce.

With the city of Escanaba now allowing marijuana businesses, Mayor Mark Ammel says the community will be able to benefit from the operations, unlike the one currently open within the city limits but on tribal land.

Newscast Friday, Sept. 16, 2022

A divided Escanaba City Council passed marijuana ordinances last night on 3-2 votes. Applications will be available beginning Oct. 3. The original date recommended by the city administration was Oct. 10. Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan says that would give the public time to respond with a ballot initiative.

A rash in car thefts has baffled local authorities. Acting Delta County Prosecutor Lauren Wickman says there is a group of juveniles who are continuing to steal vehicles because there is no place to house them at the county jail or other facility.

Inmates with mental illnesses continue to be housed at the Delta County Jail instead of being placed at facilities that can help them. It is something that is frustrating Delta County Sheriff Ed Oswald who says one of two inmates that needs to be placed at a state facility has been at the jail now for about four months.

The United Way of Delta County will be focusing on School Readiness programs as it moves forward with its fundraising. It follows an effort to identify a need in the community that could benefit from Unity Way funds. Executive Director Julie Mallard says they hope it will help improve their fundraising.

School safety meetings are now held twice a year with schools in the Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District. One was held in August. The next when will be held in January. ISD Superintendent Doug Leisenring says they realized that they needed to address school safety more than just once a year.

Newscast Friday, Sept. 9, 2022

Delta County has until next week to submit a plan to the Department of Natural Resources on how to provide day use at Fuller Park. The DNR says day use of the park is stipulated as part of the 1987 grant used to purchase the property.

 

Day use was eliminated recently to expand camping at the park. Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo says they’ve talked about eliminating two or three campsites for parking and picnic tables.

Veterans on the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight returned to the U.P. last night to a large crowd of people cheering, waving signs and welcoming home Korean and Vietnam War veterans from their trip to Washington D.C. to see the memorials dedicated in their honor. Doug Heath of Escanaba says the reception at the Delta County Airport was unexpected.

Delta County Sheriff Ed Oswald says he is looking at the possibility of modifying a portion of the Delta County Jail to house juveniles. He says he met recently with the judges in the county to determine how they could make it work.

Newscast Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022

Mission 19 of the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight will take 82 veterans to Washington D.C. tomorrow. It includes six veterans from the Korean War era. The rest are Vietnam War Veterans. Organizer Scott Knauf says they will gather tonight for a program and banquet and then leave the Delta County Airport by 6:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Newscast Friday, Sept. 2, 2022

Attendance at the Upper Peninsula State Fair topped 100,000 fairgoers for the first time. The milestone was reached by Sunday noon, Aug. 21. By the end of the seven-day fair, Vickie Micheau, executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, says more than 103,000 people attended.

The Escanaba City Council will consider placing surveillance cameras throughout the city at its regular meeting tonight in an effort to reduce crime. Tonight’s meeting is at 7 p.m. at city hall. It is aired on YouTube at the City of Escanaba.
