It has been three years since the Northern Lights YMCA held its annual fundraising event at the Island Resort and Casino. Affected by COVID, Hadele Peacock says it is good to be able to hold the event once again. The Y is hosting “A Taste of Italy” on Friday.

Bay College has received a lot of applications for college president, a lot more than they expected. The deadline to apply is Wednesday.

 

Laura Coleman is retiring as president in June. She says the consultant helping the college find qualified applicants was surprised that there has been such a good reaction.

THC found in marijuana is being blamed for high speeds found on Michigan roadways including U.S. 2 through the southern U.P. Gladstone State Police Post Commander 1st Lt. Gregg Cunningham troopers often encounter drivers going at a high rate of speed on U.S. 2. He blames marijuana.

Newscast Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023

The Delta County Board of Commissioners delayed talking about how they would like to see the county parks operate after accepting a letter to terminate services from the Delta Conservation District.

 

Some commissioners talked about hiring the current person at the conservation district who is in charge of the parks. Delta County Chair Dave Moyle says it’s important not to make a quick decision but he does know how he would like to see the parks operate.

Delta County Commissioners agreed to accept a letter from the Delta Conservation District on a 3-1 vote to dissolve an agreement to operate the county’s parks. Commissioner Steve Viau voted “present” as tensions rose during the discussion.

Newscast Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023

The Delta County Board of Commissioners are expected tonight to determine how they might proceed to choose a new county administrator. The board fired Emily DeSalvo two weeks ago after she made a public statement on how she was being treated by commissioners. As the board begins to look for a new administrator, County Chair Dave Moyle says he wants someone who strong in finance.

Escanaba Mayor Mark Ammel says he thinks the arrival of cruise ships this summer will be “fantastic” for the city of Escanaba. American Queen Voyages plans 26 stops in Escanaba.

The Gladstone City Commission will be holding budget sessions Feb. 27 and 28. City Manager Eric Buckman says the city is still dealing with the MIRS retirement costs that many communities are dealing with. It continues to affect the budget.

The Escanaba area can expect a $1.25 million economic impact from the cruise ships that will be visiting this community this year. American Queen Voyages will be making 26 stops from May through October. Vickie Micheau with the Delta Chamber of Commerce says American Queen is interested in what makes the community unique.

Delta County Commissioners chose county controller and human resource specialist Ashleigh Young to lead the county as interim administrator as they search for a new administrator. Young has worked for the county for three years. She was an auditor for a private firm before that. She assured commissioners that she would be able to do both jobs.

Fire damaged a home in Escanaba yesterday. Escanaba Public Safety says an upstairs room at the back of a home at 208 South 4th Street was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Newscast Monday, Feb. 13, 2023

American Queen Voyages has announced that it plans to make 26 stops at Escanaba this summer. The vessels Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager will be making stops between Chicago and Toronto between May and September.

The Escanaba Planning Commission approved one site plan and special land use permit and denied another. Plans were approved for a Joyology at the former Frame Crafters building at 2430 Ludington Street.

Newscast Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023

Dave Moyle says he was shocked at what happened Tuesday night when the county board terminated Emily DeSalvo as Delta County’s Administrator. Although there were rumors even during the election that DeSalvo’s position might be on the line with Moyle as county chair, Moyle says he did not go into Tuesday night’s meeting expecting to fire DeSalvo.

Newscast Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023

Emily DeSalvo was fired at last night’s Delta County board meeting. The vote was 3 to 2 with Commissioners Bob Barron, Bob Peterson and County Chair Dave Moyle voting to terminate her contract immediately. Commissioners John Malnar and Steve Viau voted no. DeSalvo gave an 11 minute speech that voiced her concerns on the conduct of commissioners.
