The Gladstone City Commission set an assessment rate Monday for the 4th Street Project. Gladstone City Commissioner Brad Mantella says it is a separate project from the 9th Street Project but being done at the same time.

State Rep. Sara Cambensy of Marquette says building a vertical space launch in undeveloped forest land north of Marquette has many concerned. She urged patience and willingness to give the project a fair shake before dismissing the project. She says she believes there is much more to lose if we allow fear to predetermine what the project will be.

The Delta Area Transit Authority is asking for millage renewals in two cities and four townships on the August ballot. DATA Director John Stapleton says they are asking for .6 mils in Escanaba and Gladstone and .5 mils in Ford River, Brampton, Masonville and Ensign Townships for five years.

Suicide was a major problem in the area this year before the Coronavirus pandemic and the isolation caused by the shutdowns and social distancing continues to fuel mental health problems in the community. Racing at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba Saturday night is dedicated to spread the word about the suicide and the help that is available to those suffering with mental health issues. Christian Groleau was a racer at the U.P. International Raceway at the fairgrounds. He took his life in January. His friend Aly Sullivan is one of those putting on the Groleau Memorial Race Saturday.

The demolition of the former Delta County Jail building could begin in the fall. Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan says Proxima Management Group has been conducting soil contamination and stability tests as the first part of a hotel project at the site.

Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District Superintendent Doug Leisenring says the next four to five weeks could move educators in all sorts of different directions as school districts prepare for students to return to school.

The Escanaba City Council is looking to delay a decision on whether or not to allow marijuana businesses to open in the city. The council directed the administration to develop an ordinance to continue to opt out of recreational marijuana sales for another two years. Mayor Marc Tall says he wants to see how marijuana businesses fare in other U.P. communities.

The chair of the Escanaba Planning Commission says she hopes the city council will see that tonight’s decision on taking over the duties of the planning commission “is more detrimental than is necessary.”

 

In an email to City Manager Patrick Jordan, Christine Williams says the “city has a good group of commissioners who work hard to uphold the duties they have been asked to perform.”

 

The city council tonight will consider assuming the duties of the planning commission until the commission is able to meet a quorum at two consecutive regular meetings. The council will also hold a first hearing on reducing the planning commission from 9 to 7 members.

The Escanaba Harbor Advisory Committee said goodbye last night to Larry Gravatt after 11 years as Escanaba’ Harbormaster.

 

Gravatt talked about the accomplishments at the harbor during his tenure that includes fixing the L-dock, starting Marina Fest, dredging the harbor mouth and replacing Pier 2. He says the most important project he worked on was the elimination of weeds in the harbor.

The Escanaba City Council will consider temporarily taking over the duties of the Escanaba Planning Commission and reducing the number of members on the commission. The move was announced yesterday in an email to commission members by Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan.

Newscast July 13, 2020

Superintendents within the Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District are meeting today to begin talking about how to prepare for in-person instruction when classes begin in the fall. It affects 6,200 students in eight school districts. ISD Superintendent Doug Leisenring says they will be talking with public health officials on how to proceed.

The U.P. State Fair Authority approved plans to go ahead with livestock exhibitions at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in August despite no state fair this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. State Sen. Ed McBroom who represents Dickinson County on the authority says the event will be called the Lori Branstrom Memorial Livestock Exhibition.

Delta County Commissioners voted to support the extension of the Escanaba River/Wells Township Shoreline project that has been delayed as a result of COVID-19. Rory Mattson with the Delta Conservation District says contractors that could do the environmental cleanup found themselves very busy following the shutdown due to the Coronavirus.

The Delta County Board Commissioners will consider a request tonight to support an appeal by the city of Escanaba to a Michigan Tax Tribunal ruling on the Dark Store issue with Menard’s. Escanaba City Manager Patrick Jordan said in a letter to Delta County Chair Pat Johnson that the cost of an appeal to the Michigan Court of Appeals and possibly state Supreme Court are estimated to be between $50,000 and $80,000.

Health officials from public health will be meeting with school officials to help develop plans for students to return to the classroom in the fall. Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School Superintendent Doug Leisenring says school principals will be meeting Wednesday and school superintendents next week. He says the obvious changes will be limiting movement throughout the schools to control the interaction of students throughout the day.

Livestock exhibits will continue at the U.P. State Fairgrounds where the U.P. State Fair will not. State Sen. Ed McBroom who serves on the U.P. State Fair Authority says they will have an advisory meeting next week with the superintendents of the various barns to decide what they want to do.

The Upper Peninsula State Fair has been postponed until 2021. The U.P. State Fair Authority made the decision yesterday after determining that they would not be able to meet the current crowd restrictions. Skerbick Entertainment Group was also denied permission to operate its fair rides.
